My grandpa had a rule about the World Series. Didn’t matter who was playing, didn’t matter how late it went, the radio was on. He’d sit in the garage with the door up, feet on a bucket, and listen to every pitch. The first time he let me stay out there with him, I was maybe eight.

I didn’t understand half of what was happening. But I understood that it mattered to him, and that was enough. I still think about that garage every October. This year more than most.

Cody DeLorenzo, who left Lambeau Field on foot two Fridays ago carrying a game ball, arrived at Ford Field Saturday afternoon, 313 miles later, in time for Sunday’s game. The run raised money for Henry Ford Health’s Game On Cancer, which helps families with the bills that don’t stop when someone’s in treatment. His wife Shannon is fighting breast cancer. “It’s okay to lean on others,” she said. “That always makes everything easier.” The Packers lost the game. Cody won the week.

Most NFL team owners get a statue, or nothing. Bob Harlan is getting his name on the stadium. At halftime tonight, the Packers will unveil it on Lambeau's northeast façade, next to Ted Thompson, a spot reserved for the two men who built the modern Packers without ever playing a down. Harlan hired Ron Wolf, who hired Holmgren, who traded for Favre. He got the 2000 renovation referendum passed when it was anything but a sure thing, and he answered his own phone for 19 years as president. He died in March at 89. If you’re at the game, stay in your seat at the half. If you’re home, don’t go to the kitchen.

Anyone who eats gluten-free knows the drill. Walk into a bakery, scan the case, find the one dry muffin in the corner with the handwritten “GF” tag, and pretend that’s a treat. The Common Council deadlocked last Tuesday on an ordinance that would have created a registry of vacant commercial buildings and charged owners a fee for letting them sit. Business owners and developers showed up to kill it. Brown County Supervisor and developer John VanderLeest called it a step backward. Steve Schneider, who co-founded Bug Tussle, said he spent more than twenty years assembling a block of properties in the 1000 block of Main Street for what he called a “really sizeable development at some point,” and a vacancy fee would punish exactly that kind of patience. The city’s argument is the opposite: empty buildings downtown and along Military and Main drag down the blocks around them, and the owners sitting on them feel no pressure. A tie means it’s dead for now. It’ll be back.

Fifty-two years ago, a handful of P.E.O. women set up folding tables so they could send a neighbor back to school. This weekend, it’s 30-plus boutiques at the Oneida Casino Hotel, and the total handed out to Brown County women since those folding tables is past $1,000,000. The math hasn’t changed: $5 at the door, the vendors cut a share of every sale to the scholarship fund, and you walk out with half your Christmas list done before November starts. Friday is the quieter window if you want to actually talk to the makers. Saturday morning is the hunt, in and out before the kids need their costumes on. Door County Lavender, Relish, London Dairy Alpacas, Fleurs, Pure Joy, Blacksmith Clothing, and the rest of the list are all there both days.

Fifty-seven years as a franchise, one of five teams that had never won it, and they finished it on the road in Tampa on a Wednesday night. Four games to one. Game 1 by a run, Game 2 from four down in the first inning, a World Series record eight two-out runs in Game 3, a gut punch in the 12th in Game 4, and then Jacob Misiorowski took the ball in Game 5 and the Rays never had a chance. 4 to 1. Cooper Pratt drove in the first run, Brice Turang scored it, and the bullpen that cracked once all series held. The parade will be in Milwaukee and the date hasn’t been set yet. Green Bay will find a reason to celebrate anyway, and Lambeau tonight is a good place to start.

Lions 20, Packers 17, on a 22-yard field goal as time expired. Green Bay missed a 26-yarder, had a 35-yarder blocked, went 1 for 4 in the red zone, dropped an interception and a touchdown, lost two centers in the same game, and got flagged eight times. Josh Jacobs’ debut was the bright spot: 16 touches, 71 yards, and a 25-yard catch where he broke two tackles. Love threw for 274 and two scores. That’s 4 and 3 and last in the NFC North, which tells you more about the division than the team. Carolina comes to Lambeau tonight off a 43 to 13 loss, and the Panthers won here last year. Short week, prime time, a get-right game if they want it.
