📰New Stories of the Week in Green Bay

📌 H.J. DeBaker Eagles Nest Park Nears Completion

Brown County’s long-anticipated H.J. DeBaker Eagles Nest Park and Boat Launch is nearly ready to open. Located on Nicolet Drive in Green Bay, the new recreation area features four boat launch lanes, a kayak launch, nearly 100 parking spots, and concrete walkways. The harbor is over seven feet deep, designed for 18–22 ft boats, and provides a safe port during windy weather.

Brown County Parks Director Matt Kriese says the site is designed for everyone — from fishing and picnicking to sunset viewing. The park is expected to open within the next week.

Six local high school seniors graduated from the City Stadium Automotive program on May 27 — leaving high school with 28+ college credits and a technical diploma from NWTC already in hand.
The two-year program, run in partnership with East High and the Green Bay Area School District, gives students a head start on careers in automotive tech and customer service.

👏 Big congrats to students from East, Preble, and Southwest!

📌 DNR Urges Drivers to Watch for Turtles

It’s nesting season — and that means turtles are on the move.
The Wisconsin DNR is asking drivers in the Green Bay area to stay alert for turtles crossing roads near water. Car strikes are a leading cause of turtle deaths, especially for females looking for nesting sites.

✅ What to do:
• Slow down near wetlands and ponds
• Avoid disturbing nests — report them to the DNR instead

This small action helps protect local wildlife and preserve Wisconsin’s turtle population for future generations.

📌 Green Bay’s Coal Piles Immortalized in New Mural

An iconic 1990s photo of a skier on Green Bay’s coal piles has been reimagined as a mural in the Broadway District.

🎨 Painted by local artist Beau Thomas, the mural at 305 S. Broadway honors a playful piece of local history. The original skier, Steve Thoe, posed for a satirical “Ski Green Bay” poster that became a cult favorite — sold out of bars long before it went viral.

As the city plans the eventual relocation of the coal piles, this mural captures Green Bay’s humor, resilience, and creativity.

📍 Find it in the alley behind the building.

A new initiative, Grow Solar Green Bay – Fox Valley, is helping local residents, nonprofits, and small businesses go solar — at below-market prices.
Partnered with the Midwest Renewable Energy Association, this bulk-buying program aims to lower costs and support Green Bay’s clean energy goals.

The village of Denmark just shared new renderings for its upcoming Community Center, giving residents a visual preview of what’s to come. The modern design features multi-use spaces aimed at hosting events, activities, and public gatherings.

This project is a big win for local community building, and it's exciting to watch it take shape!
