📰New Stories of the Week in Green Bay

📌Wisconsin Ends Sales Tax on Home Energy Bills

Good news for Wisconsin households: The new state budget eliminates the 5% sales tax on residential energy bills year-round, saving taxpayers an estimated $178 million over two years. Previously, the exemption only applied from November through April.

This change is expected to provide relief for lower- and middle-income families as energy costs remain among the highest in the Midwest.

📌Historic Neil Armstrong Watch Funds Scholarships for Northeast Wisconsin Students

  • A rare 18-karat gold Omega Speedmaster, once owned by Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon, was auctioned for $2.1 million, setting a world record for commemorative Omega astronaut watches.

  • The watch was gifted to Armstrong in November 1969 after the Apollo 11 mission.

  • Wisconsin watch collector Stefan Osdene purchased the piece years ago without realizing its significance. After the auction, he donated $17,000 to the Brian LaViolette Scholarship Foundation in Green Bay, which supports college-bound students.

  • Osdene said the donation mattered because it creates a local impact, not just a distant gesture. He also contributed to charities chosen by Mark Armstrong, reflecting values of exploration, education, and service.

  • Fun fact: Osdene and Doug LaViolette (co-founder of the foundation) met after Doug bought a watch on eBay for $27, leading to a lasting friendship.

📌 School Registration Now Open for Green Bay Families

Registration for Green Bay Area Public Schools is now open. New families can register online through Infinite Campus at GBAPS2025registration and will need proof of residency, a birth certificate, and immunization records. Check updated school boundaries using GBAPS2025FindMySchool. Fees are $50 for elementary students and $70 for middle and high school, with additional costs for parking passes and instrument rentals. Free or reduced lunch applications open in August at FreeandReducedLunch2025. Make sure your student’s vaccines are current; seniors need a meningitis booster.

📌 Green Bay Launches New Online Volunteer Portal

The City of Green Bay has introduced Volgistics, an online platform that makes it easier for residents to find and sign up for volunteer opportunities. Through the portal, users can create profiles, browse upcoming events, and apply from their phones. Organizations and businesses can also partner with the city on projects. Ready to get involved? Apply at volgistics.com/appform/2101050278 or explore opportunities at volgistics.com/od/753931.
